In Freedom’s Shadow
In Freedom’s Shadow: Mapping Black Patriots in the Revolution is a 2026 digital humanities project by Northeastern University graduate student Cassidy Loft. The project aims to recover, make visible, and digitally map the lives and service of Black patriots from New Hampshire’s Monadnock Region who served in the American Revolution.
This work uses a variety of digital maps to reveal the varied roles of Black Patriots during the war, challenging assumptions that their participation was limited in scope or geography.
This Story Map visualizes the multiple locations in which Black patriots from the Monadnock Region participated in key battles and events of the Revolutionary War, using a narrative-driven map tour to integrate historical context, major military engagements, and individual life histories into a cohesive, chronological spatial narrative.
